DOT Urine Specimen Proficiency Mock Demonstrations

What's Required for DOT Certification

To finalize your DOT urine collector qualification, you must complete:

  • Five (5) consecutive, error-free mock collections
  • For each device type used (e.g., split-specimen cups)
  • Observed in real time by a qualified trainer
  • Properly documented on Federal Custody and Control Forms (CCFs)

Failure to complete mock collections correctly can delay certification and limit your ability to perform DOT collections.

Required Mock Collection Scenarios (As required under 49 CFR Part 40.35)

Your five mock collections must include each of the following scenarios:

  1. Uneventful Collection - A standard, problem-free urine collection
  2. Insufficient Quantity- -Donor cannot provide the required 45 mL
  3. Temperature Out of Range - Specimen is outside 3238C (90100F)
  4. Refusal or Failure to Sign/Initial -  Donor refuses required CCF steps
  5. Adulteration or Tampering Attempt - Donor has something in mouth or attempts to alter the specimen

All five must be completed consecutively and without error.

ATA Provides a Qualified Monitoring DOT-Compliant

Each mock collection must be monitored by a qualified trainer who meets DOT requirements, including one or more of the following:

  • At least one year conducting DOT collections
  • At least one year training DOT collectors
  • Completion of a DOT Train-the-Trainer program

The trainer must certify in writing that all mock collections were performed correctly and error-free.

Flexible Monitoring Options

  • In-person observation
  • Live webcam monitoring (real-time interaction required)

Remote monitoring is fully acceptable as long as it meets DOT real-time supervision standards.

Proper Documentation Is Mandatory

  • Each mock collection must be recorded on a Federal Custody and Control Form (CCF)
  • All five must be consecutive and error-free
  • Documentation must be retained as proof of DOT qualification
